Sitka deer measure 50-80 inches with tail. Males weigh about 120 pounds (54 kg), females average 80 pounds (36 kg). Bucks up to 200 pounds have been reported. In the wild, Sitka deer live 10-12 years, and in captivity they live 15-17 years.

Sitka Black-tailed Deer have relatively short antlers, which have three points. Summer coat is usually brown or chestnut, and it turns dark gray with a slight brown tint in winter. This deer is purely herbivorous, and mating males can suffer from starvation in winter and spring.
