Sitka Deer - Habitat
Sitka Black-tailed Deer inhabit Southeast Alaska and the north-coastal lands of British Columbia. They were successfully introduced to the islands of: Alexander Archipelago, Yakutat, Prince William Sound, Kodiak and Afognak.

Sitka Deer are found in the temperate, coniferous forests and in coastal rain forests. Their thick-diameter guard fur is well adapted to the rainy climate. They can be migratory and resident. Migratory deer (usually bucks) move to high elevation alpine habitats in spring and descend to the forests with first heavy frosts. Does and their fawn stay down on the mountain, where trees protect them from the predators.
Sitka Deer - Description
The Sitka Black tailed Deer (Odocoileus hemionus sitkensis) is a subspecies of the Mule Deer. It is smaller, stockier, and has a shorter face then other black-tailed deer. In summer Sitka Deer coats are chestnut or reddish-brown with white uneven spots, and in winter they loose their red highlights and are replaced by dark brownish gray coloration. The tail is black with a light underside. Normal adult antlers are relatively small, having three points (including the eye guard); they are dark-brown with black-tailed branching.
An interesting fact about Sitka Black-tailed Deer is that they are color-blind and cannot see stationary objects. But the slightest movement attracts their attention; even the blinking of an eyelid makes Sitka Black-tailed Deer freeze and study the object or sends an alerted animal running for safety.
