Normal dispersed hunting pressure has little influence on Sitka Black-tailed Deer. Hunting is concentrated in the alpine and sub alpine areas. The largest harvest is taken in November during the rut, when bucks respond to a call resembling the doe's bleat. In the winter, heavy snow concentrates Sitka Deer at low elevations allowing for a higher harvest.
A Sitka Deer hunt is accomplished using rifles, powder, archery equipment and shotguns. The best hunting methods are spot and stalk, still and stand hunting. These methods are combined with rattling and calling. Hunts are organized from August through December with a limit of up to 4 Sitka Deer in different regions.
Sitka Black-tailed Deer' behavior is elusive and unpredictable; their senses of hearing and smell are very acute, which makes Deer challenging and exciting to hunt. This species is hunted for its low-fat meat and beautiful mount.
Length: 50-80 inches with tail.
Weight: about 120 pounds (54 kg) for males, 80 pounds (36 kg) for females. Bucks up to 200 pounds have been reported.
Life Span: 10-12 years in the wild, 15-17 in captivity.
Sitka Deer - Status
Nowadays Sitka Black-tailed Deer are abundant residents of Alaska and are not designated at risk. Due to the fact that they are game species, Sitka Deer are considered regionally important. Sitka Deer - Hunting Links
