Sitka Deer - Breeding
The rut of Sitka Black-tailed Deer begins at fall, peaks during late November, and completes in December. Adult bucks feed occasionally at that time and loose much of their fat reserve. Does begin to breed during their second year and continue producing fawns until the age of 12-15. At their prime time, Sitka Does (5-10 years) produce two fawns annually, so the productivity of this species is rather high. They are born in early June after a gestation period of 199-204 days. A doe breeds for the first time at one and a half years. If she doesn't breed during the first cycle, she comes into season again in about a month. A newborn fawn weighs 6-8 pounds and stands about 12 inches tall. By the end of the summer they acquire brownish-gray color like adult Sitka Deer. Sitka Deer - Management
The most serious problem for Sitka Black-tailed Deer management is the loss of winter ranges due to clear-cut logging. This species is highly dependent on uneven-aged old-growth hemlock forests, and forage is unavailable in clear-cuts during the winter; besides, dense conifer growth in clear-cuts shade out all of the under story, leaving a poor habitat for Sitka Deer for 100 years or longer. Forest management practices allow clear-cut logging in Alaska every 90-125 years to preserve the unique landscape and habitat for Sitka Black-tailed Deer and other beautiful animals.
